Henrico teen makes his own snow, invites friends over to snowboard

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 15-year-old is bringing “Old Man Winter” to his home in Glen Allen.

When his parents told him they weren’t ready to take him snowboarding, Mason Craven brought snowboarding to the neighborhood.

While it may look like it at first, it’s not a blizzard in Denver.

“I’ve developed a snow maker from plans I found online,” Craven told 8News. “I bought all the parts online and have been blowing snow since it’s been cold enough for the past two days.”

Mason’s mother, Kay Craven, said her son was fed up with the lack of powder in the state and decided to do something about it.

“He checks the weather forecast everyday for Wintergreen, Snowshoe, Richmond, and since he wasn’t getting snow in any of those places, he was going to make it himself,” K. Craven said.

Tuesday night, Mason was the most popular kid on the block. Thanks to his creation, Mason and some buddies spent the evening snowboarding on the six inches of snow he’s already made.

“I’ve always loved snowboarding and snow,” he said. “And since Richmond hasn’t had any this season, I thought I would go ahead and make it myself.”

Mason added that after a little convincing, even his parents are now “on board” with the snow.

“They were a little skeptical about how it would work, but after they saw the results, they were a little amazed and shocked at what I did.”
