RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The summer driving season is the most deadly on Virginia roadways each year, according to AAA.

In the month of July 2014, there were close to 9,500 motor vehicle accidents in Virginia — 5,400 of which resulted in injuries. Last year, 58 people were killed on Virginia roadways in July alone, according to the Division of Motor Vehicles Crash Facts Report.

Police will be out in force for the holiday to help keep Virginia’s highways safe and to assist those who need help. They’re urging motorists to obey the law and stay safe.

State Police say 75 percent of their force will be patrolling the roadways over the holiday weekend.

“Please celebrate the holiday responsibly. There will be zero tolerance for drinking and driving, don’t take the risk of someone else’s life or the life of your own,” Sgt. Stephan Vick, with the Virginia State Police says. “Make the responsible choice and designate a sober driver, if you plan to drink.”

Police also remind all drivers to be aware of and follow Virginia’s “Move-Over” law, which was expanded beginning July 1. The law requires drivers to yield right-of-way or reduce speed when approaching stationary emergency vehicles on highways, including any vehicle displaying a flashing, blinking, or alternating blue, red, or amber light or lights. That means police, fire, rescue, tow trucks — everyone.

“All emergency responders who put their lives at risk by assisting those in need on our highways should be given plenty of room to operate safety and the best chance of returning safely to their families after the holiday weekend.”
