HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Two people have been charged with attempted capital murder after a Hanover County Sheriff’s deputy was injured during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon.
According to the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy initiated a traffic stop in the 7200 block of Bell Creek Road for an equipment violation shortly after 12 p.m. The driver, 24-year-old Marcus Dennis Wade, was found to be wanted out of Virginia Beach. While the officer was verifying warrants, the passenger of the vehicle, identified as 21-year-old Krystal Rae Roberts, switched seats with Wade.
When the deputy attempted to take Wade into custody, he refused to exit the vehicle. When the deputy attempted to remove him from the vehicle, Roberts rolled the window up on the deputy’s arm and attempted to drive away. After initially being unable to remove his arm as the vehicle pulled away, the deputy ultimately was able to free his arm. A second deputy that responded to the scene was also assaulted while trying to stop Roberts from fleeing the scene. Only one officer suffered minor injuries.
Shortly after the vehicle fled, deputies located the vehicle and took the two occupants into custody. Wade is being charged with attempted capital murder, felony assault on law enforcement, driving on a suspended license and numerous traffic violations. Roberts is being charged with attempted capital murder, two counts of felony assault on law enforcement, reckless driving, felony eluding and driving on a suspended license. Both are being held at Pamunkey Regional Jail.
