RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — All flights at Richmond International Airport are canceled. Flying in and out is not the only problem — driving to and from the airport is also a challenge.
Tom Zarro is trying to get home to the west coast but before he does that he has to drop off his rental car. But there’s a problem, the roads are not clear to drive it in.
“Oh man, I’ve never seen snow like this before. I’m from San Diego — we don’t have this out there,” Zarro explained. “It’s got to be at least a foot everywhere — that’s why I’m afraid to get off the beaten path.”
The USO inside the airport is usually open from 8 in the morning until 9 at night, but for the past few days, it’s been open 24 hours to take care of stranded military men and women. Volunteers here usually feed 3,000 people a month, but so far this month they’ve fed nearly 4000. As a result, the USO needs donations for food.
“You know having 80 military people is like having a team of hungry teenagers stuck in one place bored you know they eat a lot,” said Tricia Riggs.
Some army privates walked a couple of miles from their hotel just to learn their flight was canceled.
Cabs and shuttles from hotels are not running and a huge section of the airport is not plowed.
