RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — VDOT crews are tackling the roads now that this weekend’s winter storm has moved out.
Conditions of major routes, such as interstates and primary routes, are slowly improving as crews continue to plow and treat roads in clear weather conditions.
Secondary routes remain in severe condition, meaning that heavy snow and ice covers the roadways. More than a foot of snow fell in much of the area and crews are faced with extensive cleanup.
VDOT thanks for the public for their patience as the work continues in 12-hour shifts.
“While some of the roads may be clearing, navigating secondary routes will be difficult over the next few days,” said Richmond District Maintenance Engineer, Steven McNeely, “Travel dangers will continue on even the major routes as piles of plowed snow melts and refreezes on the pavement.”
VDOT continues to strongly discourage travel for their safety. Snow drifts and icy conditions, particularly on raised pavement surfaces, such as bridges, overpasses and ramps, will continue to pose hazards.
