Virginia State’s Thweatt resigns after one season

ETTRICK, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State University Head Football Coach Byron Thweatt resigned his position Tuesday, according to a source.

The news was first reported on Twitter by HBCU Gameday.

Thweatt coached the Trojans to a 6-4 record in his one season at the helm and had tweeted as recently as Wednesday about bringing in local recruits before National Signing Day, which is coming up on Wednesday, February 3rd.

“Another local commit is in the fold. Adding quality student-athletes to the family. WATCH OUT!!!” Thweatt tweeted on January 20th at 12:35 PM. By 10:00 PM Tuesday night that tweet no longer appeared on Thweatt’s timeline. He also deleted his twitter bio.

No official at Virginia State replied to multiple requests for comment, but a source confirmed Virginia State will need a new football coach.

Hours after the tweet from HBCU Gameday, FootballScoop.com reported that Thweatt was leaving Virginia State to become a linebackers coach at James Madison University for new head coach Mike Houston. James Madison had not confirmed this report as of 11:00 PM Tuesday.

Before taking the Virginia State job, Thweatt had previously coach linebackers at the University of Richmond.
