How does Henrico County decide which neighborhoods get plowed first?

Henrico County, VA (WRIC) — Five days since the first snowfall, Henrico residents are questioning why it is taking so long to clear their neighborhood streets.

In some subdivisions, we found streets plowed and dry right next to streets still covered with snow and ice.

Miriam Ramirez lives on one of those snowy streets.

“Nobody has come to plow it or anything. I mean I can’t go anywhere,” she told 8News reporter Kristin Smith.

Her car was stuck for the second time in 24 hours. She had yet to see a snowplow.

“It’s been days,” she added. “I don’t see why they’re not out here yet.”

Just a few blocks away, neighbors struggled on another icy street.

“Awful, and it’s still slick,” said Raymond Hunter. “Cars slide from side to side until they get to one of the dry spots up here.”

So how does the county prioritize who gets plowed first? According to Mike Jennings, Henrico’s Assistant Director of Public Works, they give snow plow drivers maps of areas to clear. The order in which they plow those neighborhoods is up to the crews.

As of late Tuesday morning, plows had hit about 40 percent of the county’s residential roads.

Jennings explained that the county’s goal is to get all of the neighborhoods cleared by Wednesday, but that it could be Thursday before everything is done.
