CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC/AP) — The trial for six people charged in the slaying of a Waynesboro reserve police captain began Monday.
Shantai Shelton, Mersadies Shelton, Daniel Mathis, Travis Bell (also known as Kweli Uhuru), Anthony Stokes and Gert Wright (also known as Halisi Uhuru) are all facing charges in connection to the 2014 kidnapping and murder of Captain Kevin Quick.

If convicted, four of the six people charged could face life in prison.
Just last week, a federal judge denied a defense motion to drop several charges in the case. Earlier this month, defense attorneys for two of the six men accused in the 2014 kidnapping and slaying of Kevin Quick had filed a motion to drop several firearms charges, saying the robbery charges were not acts of violence.
In rejected the motion, U.S. District Judge Glen Conrad wrote that although certain methods used to kill someone – such as poison – may not use direct physical force, the act of knowingly harming someone else qualifies a crime as a violent one.
