NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – One man died at the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 18th Street and Peterson’s Place in Newport News, according to police.
Police identified the man as 23-year-old Kawanza Jamal Beaty of Newport News.
No officers were hurt in the shooting, which happened around 2:00 a.m., said Newport News Police spokesman Lou Thurston.
Thurston told WAVY.com police received information about a man armed with a shotgun. When officers approached Beaty, he ran. At some point while officers were chasing him, Beaty pointed a shotgun at them and one of the officers fired.
A sawed-off shotgun was recovered at the scene.
There will be two separate investigations, a criminal investigation by the Newport News Police Department’s Homicide Unit and an internal investigation by Internal Affairs, Thurston said.
Three officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay.
