RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – A Petersburg bus station that was the site of civil rights protests in the 1960s is among six sites that have been added to the Virginia Landmarks Register.
The Trailways Bus Station in downtown Petersburg was a stop on the Freedom Ride civil rights campaign. The station reflected the segregationist era, with separate facilities for black and white travelers.
The station is privately owned now.
The other additions to the register include a 20th century railroad depot in Pittsylvania County, the site of a British fort in the Chesapeake bay, and a one-room school house in Chesapeake that served African-American students.
The sites were added to the register by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
