CHESTERFIELD, Va (WRIC) – This week marks six years since a local man was beat to death in Chesterfield. Damion West’s killer has never been found.
“When they killed him, they not only took my grandson, my daughter’s son, my other grandson’s brother, and Damion’s daddy, they took a son from God,” said Constance Powell, his grandmother.
It was happened on July 9, 2009. West was working at the Ivy Walk Apartments in Chesterfield as an unarmed security guard. The 28-year-old was beaten to death. The fatal strike was a blow to the head.
“He was just left out there dead,” said Powell.
All these years later, the family is asking the public to come forward.
“I want them to find out who did it and why they did it,” said Powell.
West left behind a 3-year-old son. Damion West Jr. is now 9, and constantly asks about his father.
“He remembers everything his dad taught him, everything his dad said. We were at church on Monday and the preacher asked him who he wanted to pray for and he said ‘I want to pray for my daddy.’ He thinks about his daddy all the time, he talks about him all the time,” said Powell.
Powell says someone that night must have seen what happened. Police have no leads.
“It’s up to God to give them that punishment but they killed an innocent man, they killed somebody’s father,” said Powell.
July is always an especially difficult month for the family. Powell says she tries to hold on to the happy memories of her loving grandson.
“He would get me out on Sunday for dinner, that was our day. He would always call and check on me and come by, ‘how you doing? Do you need anything?’ He was a good grandson.”
