RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Between January and June of this year, there has been less than 4,200 major crime incidents.

That’s down 10 percent for the same period last year.

Chief Alfred Durham credits positive interactions with the community for the department’s success this year.

On Tuesday, he pointed out that increased youth engagement, police morale, and improved online tools to report crime have attributed to the decrease in major crimes.

In spite of the progress, Durham says there’s much more work to be done.

“No matter how successful we are with our efforts to reduce crime, we must remember that there are still those that have suffered a loss,” Durham said. “We are committed to bring these cases to a closure, and these family members — our hearts go out to them.”

Seventeen lives have been lost to violent crimes in Richmond this year and eight of those are under open investigation.
