RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — It was a tragic scene along a North Carolina highway. Last Friday, a tractor trailer slammed into bikers parked on the side of the road in Greensboro, N.C. The bikers were on their way to an event in Atlanta.
Arnie Morris from Woodbridge died at the scene. Ken (Networker) Jefferson, a well known biker from Chesterfield later died at the hospital.
Authorities tell 8News that the truck driver, Daniel Serna, worked for a Florida based trucking company. The company is called EC Trucking Enterprises. Serna of Plantation, Florida, is being charged with felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor death in connection to the crash.
According to federal records, the company only has one truck and one driver. The sole driver listed for the company encountered two random safety checks within the last 24 months. The driver passed both of those checks. However, because of privacy policies, federal officials weren’t able to confirm if that driver was Serna.
The truck was also randomly inspected once in the last 24 months. There were no reported issues.
8News called the trucking company Monday, leaving two message — the calls were not returned.
Trucker drivers aren’t allowed to drive more than 11 consecutive hours. Drivers must have at least 10 hours rest in between shifts.
Highway patrol officials believe Serna may have fallen asleep behind the wheel, but they’re still investigating what happened Friday.
Jefferson’s family has announced that his funeral will be at St. Paul’s Baptist Church on Saturday, July 25 at 2.p.m. The church is located in Richmond at 4247 Creighton Road.
