NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — “You hope it’s not real, you hope the man’s made a mistake, I just hoped he had made a mistake,” said Cleveland Bey after a doctor told him they had done all they could for his grandson.
Bey says he was driving home from work when he got a call from his granddaughter Sacara telling him his grandson Maurice had passed out on the basketball court and was being taken to the hospital. Sacara was at Quinton Park in New Kent County with her sister and dad taking a drink of her water when Maurice collapsed on the court.
“Then my dad, he snatched the water out of my hand really quick and he ran up to my brother,” said Sacara.
Maurice was rushed to the hospital as CPR was performed on the way.
“I saw him and then I started crying. And then a few minutes later, he passed,” said Sacara.
Maurice was an honor roll student and on the JV basketball team at New Kent County High School.
“He was like a role model,” said Sacara.
“Everyday he was always jolly, and always was funny. He just was a good child,” said Cleveland.
His family says he loved the game of basketball, following his favorite players like Steph Curry and Lebron James and even hit a game winner at one of his own games.
“If you put it on a scale from 1-10, he was a 12 because that’s how much he loved to play. He would play everyday of the week if he could,” said Cleveland.
Calling him a winner on the court, with a winning personality off of it.
“Everybody loved him and he loved everybody. He was here for 15 years and he made a lot of people happy and has gone on home,” said Cleveland.
The family says a cause of death has not been determined yet. A memorial service has been scheduled for Maurice on Saturday.
