Site of deadly Nottoway County crash has dangerous past

NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Family and friends visited the place where Cheyenne Martin lost her life.

The 18-year-old was driving to her dad’s house Tuesday night along East Colonial Trail Highway when according to state police, a car on Lewiston Plank Road pulled out right in front of her.

The impact sent both cars spinning. A third vehicle then careened into the crash scene.

Cheyenne was ejected from her SUV and died on the highway.

Four other people were hurt, including a 15-year-old girl who relatives say needed twenty-five stitches to her face and neck.

“It’s a bad, bad intersection,” says Robbie Jones.

Back in 2011, he witnessed another deadly accident at the same intersection.

Shirley Avent, the warden of the Lunenburg Correctional Center, died in an eerily similar crash.

Jones remembers it vividly, “The vehicle went over the median and I helped pull her out before the SUV caught on fire,” he recalls.

Cheyenne Martin’s family agrees something needs to be done to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening here again.

They suggest maybe a flashing light or even a stop light might help get drivers through the intersection more safely.

But for now, they mourn the loss of Cheyenne.

She had just graduated last month from Nottoway County High School and was set to begin college in August.

Cheyenne wanted to be a marine biologist.

As for that intersection, VDOT tells 8News there have been four crashes there over the past nineteen months.
