Great 8 Happenings: Redskins training, wizards wizarding, dragons sailing, and so much more

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) —  Looking to see some of your favorite Redskin’s players, hear some great jazz music, visit an art exhibit, or maybe even help some kids prepare to go back to school? Look no further…this weekend’s line up has got all your needs!

Start your weekend off right with the Washington Redskins. That’s right RVA, they’re back starting on July 30th for their annual training camp. There will be thirteen practices between now and August 16; there will be walk-throughs from 10:35 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. and practices from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m This year the HBO television show “Hard Knocks” will be documenting the training sessions. RGIII, Ryan Kerrigan, DeSean Jackson are just a few of the players that will be in RVA for this training event.

  • Where: Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center— 2401 West Leigh Street, Richmond, Va.
  • When: July 30-August 16 ; This weekend’s walk throughs and practices will be held from 10:35 a.m. to 11:35 a.m and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

FRIDAY

  • Wizard World Comic Con is coming to town for a weekend full of action packed events that is sure to make any fan glow with wizardy delight. Come on out and see some of your longtime favorite stars and sightings from “Star Trek”, “Lord of the Rings”, and “Star Trek.” According to the Richmond Times Dispatch, this event will feature “panel discussions, comic book shopping, celebrity meet and greets and yes, plenty of cosplay”
    Where: Greater Richmond Convention Center — 403 N 3rd St, Richmond, Va.
    When: July 31  3 p.m. to 8 p.m., August 1  10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and August 2  11 am to 5 p.m.
    Price: Admission varies from $35-$75 depending on the day—please visit site for details. Children ten and under get in free when accompanied by a paid adult (limit two per admission
  • Richmond Flying Squirrels vs Binghamton Mets Come spend your weekend with the squirrels as they face off against the Bighamton Mets. They will be having fireworks, t-shirt giveaways, Star Wars night, and more.
    Where: The Diamond— 3001 N Boulevard, Richmond, Va.
    When: July 30-August 2 Times vary
    Price: $8-$12.

SATURDAY

  • Seventh Annual Jazz and Food Festival According to the event organizers “the festival blends traditional and contemporary jazz with delicious soulful cuisine in a Christian, family oriented atmosphere.” Come listen and dance to the sounds of the groovy jazz music and grab a bite with some local vendors. Feel free to bring your own chairs and blankets. Please don not bring any outside food or beverages, coolers, or alcoholic beverages.
    Where: St. Elizabeth Catholic Church— 2nd Ave & Victor St, Richmond, Va. 23222
    When: August 1 Noon to  7:39 p.m.
    Price: $5 donation
  • Back to School Supply Giveaway and Cookout The non-profit foundation U Can Make It Too (UCMIT) along with a local organization, are hosting a back to school giveaway and community cook out. This event is free and open to all youth in the Tri-Cities (Petersburg, Hopewell, and Colonial Heights) along with the surrounding areas in Dinwiddie, Prince George, and Disputanta. Please help UCMIT reach their goal of 200 book bags for this event by donating $10. There will also be food and music

    When: August 1  Noon to 4 p.m.
  • Dragon Boat Festival The sixth annual Walgreens Richmond International Dragon Boat Festival is setting sail this Saturday. Over 30 dragon boats will be racing down the James River, and while you’re there have a beer from Sierra Nevada, grab a bite to eat from one of the many food trucks, or cool down with Tikiz Shaved Ice. There will also be Chinese cultural performances through out the day

SUNDAY

  • 10 x 10  This weekly event features artwork from 10 different artists and community organizations. This weekend’s event is hosted by Angela M.D. Allen and Marita L. Allen titled “My Kid Could Make That”
