GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A meningitis case has been confirmed at a popular area camp. Richmond Weinstein JCC officials closed its Camp Hilbert in rural Goochland County Friday because of a meningitis threat.

Initially, health officials had to determine whether the case was viral or bacterial; later in the afternoon it was determined to be viral, which is far more common and far less serious than bacterial meningitis.

Dr. Susan Fischer Davis, the Health Director for the Henrico County Health Department, told 8News the best way to prevent meningitis is frequent handwashing, and she advised people not to share drinks and food with friends.

Symptoms for both viral and bacterial meningitis include fever, headaches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes sensitivity to light and a stiff neck.

About 200 children attend the summer camp and it is open nine weeks during the summer break. The camp will reopen Monday.
