RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — It’s a smelly, nasty mess, and Richmond City Councilman Parker Agelasto wants crack down on the people who are littering.
“You can’t have maggots and flies sitting around,” said Agelasto as he looks at the garbage left on the sidewalk on Granby Street in the Fan.
Agelasto looks in one trash can and he noticed someone’s personal mail that was left behind. The councilman cleaned up some of the garbage but there was still plenty left behind.
“So we had mattresses, we had tables, we had file drawers, what was out here was frankly an entire kitchen. You had boxes of cereal, bags of flour, you had cans of tuna fish all kinds of stuff,” said the disgusted city councilman.
Agelasto is not only concerned about the trash being an eyesore and a health hazard, but he said the trash will also be on display for the hundreds of thousands of people who will visit Richmond next month for the international bike races.
Agelasto said residents must get an authorized trash can from the city and it’s illegal to just throw out trash in plastic bags. The councilman said rodents rip through the bags.
Agelasto is also encouraging people to videotape people they see littering and reporting them to city authorities.
Residents can get a trash can by calling 311. To report a person who is dumping trash call the city’s Code Enforcement Department at 804-646-6398.
