PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Monday, family and friends gathered for an emotional evening at Poplar Lawn Park in Petersburg, to remember Katoria Spellman, who died Thursday in a motorcycle crash on I-95.
Her mother, Keycia Bonner, now coming to grips with the fact that her 25-year-old daughter is gone, expressed her grief saying, “I just never imagined that she wouldn’t be here or that the thing she loved would take her away from me.”
Much beloved in her community, her mother as well as those close to Spellman, say she lived a full and happy life.
“She was my strength. She says I was her super-hero, but no, she was mine… she kept me grounded. she loved life. She lived life to the fullest. she let nothing stop her… anything she set her mind to do, she did it.”, says Bonner.
Spellman was a licensed practical nurse with her own practice in Richmond, according to her mother.
Those at Monday night’s vigil remember her for having everyone’s best interest at heart. Her best friend Lisa, who says she could call on Katoria anytime, had just learned she was planning to move to Florida.
Eerily, the last message Lisa received from her friend, said that she would miss her when she’s gone.
Lisa says, “I wish I would’ve took a second out of my day and would’ve called her and said you know what, I love you and I wish you the best, and I couldn’t do that… I can’t do that no more.”
Just this past Friday, Spellman’s mother was going to get her own motorcycle learners permit. The two had planned to ride their motorcycles together.
Bonner says, “She was excited about her mom riding with her, and, of course I didn’t get the opportunity to, but I’m going to do it because I know she would want me to.”
Funeral arrangements for Katoria Spellman are set for 12:00 Thursday afternoon at Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Petersburg.
