RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A health warning for dog owners who visit the water: Dogs who drink water with blue-green algae may ingest harmful, possibly fatal bacteria.
There have been no reports of any cases locally, but the algae is commonly found in still, scummy ponds and pools.
Blue-green algae (Cyanobacterial) blooms are often green or blue-green in color although they can sometimes be red or brown, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Avoid direct contact with water that has unusual color or where blue-green bacteria have been identified, even if the water appears to be clear.
Symptoms appear within 30 minutes and include vomiting, drooling, tremors, seizures or respiratory paralysis. There is no antidote.
