Search continues for Sussex County stabbing suspect

SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — More details are emerging about the pastor and his wife stabbed inside their Sussex County home as police continue to search for the suspect.

The attack happened early Monday morning off Comans Well Road.

Police say that the suspect, 21-year-old Maxim Chisholm, is originally from Chesterfield County.

Chisholm is accused of stabbing pastor Hugh Mayes and his wife Carol multiple times. They’re still in the hospital tonight.

Neighbors tell us the couple had been trying to help Chisholm get back on his feet.

“So Hugh said, ‘well being a pastor and a good guy, maybe you can come live with us till things get straightened out.’ They got him a job, they got him a car,” said Stanton Benson, a neighbor.

Chisholm faces multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder.

He could be driving the couple’s blue Ford Escape, with Virginia tag number XTX-6239.

“Do not approach this man, he is considered armed and dangerous. contact the authorities, let them do their job,” says Detective Derrick McKenzie with the Sussex County Sheriff’s office.

The number for authorities is 434-246-5000.

Mayes is Pastor of Shiloh Baptist church in Carson, Va. The church is part of the SBC of Virginia.

The organization released the following statement:

Our thoughts and prayers are with Pastor Hugh Mayes and his wife, Carol, as they are recovering from a stabbing in their own home Monday morning. Pastor Mayes is the lead pastor of  in Carson, Virginia.

SBC of Virginia missionary staff and area pastors have already visited them in the hospital and are working to give support to Pastor and Mrs. Mayes, as well as their church family. We are alerting our fellowship of churches around Virginia to support them in this time of need.  We also do not want to forget to pray for the suspect whom this church was in the process of helping.
