CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – The University of Virginia says it has been the target of a cyberattack originating in China.

The university says no personally identifiable information such as Social Security numbers was accessed. U.Va. says there is also no evidence that sensitive research material was compromised.

The university said in a news release Friday the attack was on its information technology systems. It says federal authorities tipped the school of the breach, identifying the country of origin as China.

U.Va. said it is working with federal authorities in an investigation.

Meantime, a system security upgrade is under way and is expected to continue through Sunday evening. During the upgrade, many university systems will not be available. That includes email.

First-year residence halls at U.Va. are set to open in one week.
