RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond School Board has decided to delay a vote that many worried would force some teachers to move schools or have their jobs cut all together.
The concerns were about what would happen if they went through with redistribution to save money.
Students, parents and some school board members were very vocal about not wanting it to happen. And at the end of the day, a divided school board opted to stop the process, after hearing from dozens of people demanding answers, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Yesterday morning, students from Open High School took to the streets to protest hours before the school board meeting. They started rallying at city hall at 8 a.m. Monday. Demonstrators told us they believe school administrators wanted to reassign or get rid of some of their teachers.
Protesters didn’t end their effort on the streets — They also went to that school board meeting, where budget transfers were on the agenda.
Officials with Richmond Schools have said that the plan that was being considered was all part of a leveling process for middle and high schools, and that teachers would not lose their jobs in the process.
