RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — According to court documents text messages and other items in Jared Fogle’s cell phone show Richmond as one of the places where he talked with prostitutes about “his interest in paying them a finder’s fee to provide him access to minors for commercial sex acts.”
The document says he only inquired about minors after engaging in sex acts with prostitutes to insure they were not police officers.
Fogle was a guest in our studios more than ten years ago, visiting school kids in the Richmond area to promote nutrition, healthy eating habits, and exercise.
Legal expert Russ Stone says prosecutors most likely agreed to a plea deal to keep potential witnesses away from the courtroom.
“They want to save the time and expense of having to bring a lot of witnesses in through the difficulty of maybe testifying about things of this nature,” said Stone.
Stone says because Fogle broke the law in Virginia, he could be charged.
“Any particular state if an offense happens in a state, they do have laws, very similar to the federal laws, that would allow them to prosecute it,” said Stone.
But Stone says that’s unlikely in federal cases that have involved states across the country.
Plea agreement with prosecutors includes a prison sentence of five to 12 and-a-half years in prison. Fogle has also volunteered to pay more than one million dollars in restitution to his victims to help them move forward.
