RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Police officers were out walking through Richmond’s Fan District on Tuesday night. This comes after a recent outbreak of violence in the neighborhood.
In the last month, there have been three shootings and at least 30 car break ins in the area. So, Richmond Police walked the streets and knocked on doors there to address the crime.
Of the 30 recent car break ins, two dozen of those cars were unlocked. Officers have started posting green “violation” notices when they see cars with valuables in plain sight.
“Please lock your cars. Please take your valuables out of the car and put it inside the house. Take away the opportunity for them to commit a crime.”
The most common complaints from folks during last night’s walk through were excess trash and graffiti in alley ways. Police say drug activity is also a problem in the neighborhood.
Officers also spent time was West Cary and South Meadow Streets, where a man died in an officer-involved shooting earlier this month.
