PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — A senior at Virginia State University is being honored as one of 83 HBCU All-Stars.

Kayla Harris-Fontaine is a mass communications major from Capitol Heights, Maryland. The recognition means that she will serve as a student ambassador for the White House Initiative on HBCUs (WHIHBCUs).

The HBCU All-Star program was established to advance President Barack Obama’s Executive Order 13532, Promoting Excellence, Innovation, and Sustainability at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Program participants were selected based on criteria recognizing accomplishments in academics, leadership and civic engagement.

Over the course of the year, the HBCU All-Stars will serve as ambassadors by providing outreach to their fellow students about the value of education and the role of the initiative as a networking resource. Through social media and their relationships with community based organizations, the All-Stars will share promising and proven practices that support opportunities for all young people to achieve their educational and career potential.

Kayla will attend the HBCU All- Star induction at this year’s HBCU Week Conference, which takes place between September 20 and 22 in Washington D.C.
