CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A fallen officer’s son had a birthday wish come true when dozens of police officers showed up to celebrate his big day.
This is the second year Bryson Jones is celebrating his birthday without his father, Brian Jones, who died in the line of duty in Norfolk.
Bryson told his mom on Thursday all he wanted for his birthday was for police officers to show up. Rebekah Jones posted a short status update on Facebook, and the request spread fast among the law enforcement community.
Bryson arrived in a limousine Saturday to BrickHeadz, a play center in Chesapeake, where he was greeted by a handful of family members and close friends.
About a half hour later, officers from across the state started showing up one by one.
“Honestly, all I expected was four or five to show up,” said Mrs. Jones. “I never imagined it would be like this. It’s amazing.”
More than 30 uniformed officers came to celebrate the 10-year-old, who’s young life hasn’t been easy.
Officer Brian Jones was shot and killed in Norfolk in May 2014 by a man who went on a shooting rampage. He left behind a wife, daughter and two sons.
“There’s no doubt Brian is looking down and he’s so proud of his brothers in blue, sisters in blue, and I know he’s happy for Bryson,” said Mrs. Jones.
In recent months, Bryson told his mom he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a police officer. He says he wants to be a hero like his dad.
“I thought for my birthday, after my dad died, I could have all the people that were with him and stuff,” said Bryson.
Following his dad’s tragic death, Bryson was hesitant to interact with cops, according to his mom. On Satuday, he hugged dozens of officers for standing by his side.
“It just means that we have a huge family that supports us and loves us, and I know that we can call on them in the middle of the night and they’re going to be there,” said Mrs. Jones. “[Bryson] is so happy. This is the first time in 15 months that I can honestly say Bryson is happy.”
Mrs. Jones say since day one she’s had the unwavering support of the “blue community.”
“No matter what we need, they’re always there for us,” she said. “It sucks so bad that Brian is gone but having the support makes it bearable.”
Bryson was also named an honorary deputy by the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office. His birthday is Sept. 6.
