CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Chesterfield County woman is sharing words of encouragement with cancer patients all over the world.

After spending time with a dear friend who had terminal cancer, Lacie Hester wanted to help others battling the disease.

So she started a program that spreads cheer through the mail.

“Destiny, you’re so amazingly strong. Keep on beating cancer. Hugs Lacie,” reads one card.

“Just thinking of you today. Keep up the great job beating cancer,” reads another.

The notes are short but the words are powerful.

Every card is hand written and decorated for young cancer warriors.

“I tell them to keep on being brave. That they’re going to beat this cancer,” says Hester.

She started Cards of Hope more than a year ago.

Every week, she sends out encouragement and cheer to more than 500 people.

“This one’s going to be for a little girl. She likes frozen, so we’re going to send her a little frozen locket as well,” explains Hester.

Hester, who is disabled, spends as many as 8 hours each day corresponding with cancer patients.

She’ll never meet them, but parents send her photos.

The smiles on the children’s faces tell Hester that she’s making a difference.

“It gives them some to look forward to the next week. OK well I know I’m going to get something in the mail and when you’re battling cancer anything helps,” adds Hester.

Hester could use some help too. Every card, every sticker, every stamp that she sends out is donated. With Cards of Hope growing quickly, she could use more contributions. To find out how you can give, click here: http://cards-of-hope.com/donations/
