RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A special visitor will greet teachers and students this morning in Richmond.

Five schools are getting a visit from Superintendent Dr. Dana Bedden to kick off the first day of school. One of those schools is Elkhardt-Thompson Middle School.

This is the first time students from Elkhardt and Thompson are under one roof for the entire school year — and a lot of work had to be done to make that happen.

The building has really gone through a transformation to help students feel comfortable with the big change. 10 old science and computer labs along with an old chorus room were renovated into classrooms to make room for the additional kids. A new sign will greet students outside and even the logo on the floor of the gym has been updated!

“What we want is on the first day of school this building is inviting and all of the students from Elkhardt and Thompson come in here together and say this is my building. This is my home,” said Tommy Kranz, RPS Asst. Superintendent of Support Services.

There’s something new for teachers, too: a second teacher’s lounge!

Nearly a thousand students will be walking through Elkhardt-Thompson’s doors this morning.
