HANOVER, Va. (WRIC) — The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of increased traffic in the Mechanicsville area ahead of the NASCAR races.
Police are encouraging drivers to plan in advance to avoid traffic congestion caused by the event. The races take place this week at the Richmond International Raceway in Henrico County.
The afternoon rush hour commute will be hampered on Thursday, September 10, due to the UNOH 100 K&N Pro Series East Race will be held at 6:40 p.m.
The Virginia529 College Savings 250 XFINITY Series Race will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11, which will also affect the afternoon rush hour commute.
Finally, traffic will be congested on Meadowbridge Road all day Saturday, September 12, due to the Federated Auto Parts 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race, which starts at 7:30 p.m.
Authorities say the most congestion occurring mid-morning and late evening (before and after the race.)
For citizens traveling on I-295, the Route 301 (Chamberlayne Road) or the Route 360 (Mechanicsville Turnpike) exits are recommended as alternatives to the Meadowbridge Road exit. In addition, citizens are encouraged to avoid Atlee Road, especially on Saturday, and utilize Shady Grove Road as an alternative.
On Saturday, deputies will monitor Meadowbridge Road closely and assist with traffic direction when needed.
