HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond and Henrico County police announced on Thursday that they are teaming up and asking for the public’s help as homicides spike in the area.
Homicide numbers are up this year, with 27 homicides so far this year in Richmond, more than half of them over the summer, and ten homicides in Henrico County.
Many of the victims were in their teens and 20s. Police say the Laburnum Road corridor along the county and city line has been a high crime area this summer with drugs connected to many of the murders.
“This recent spike — despite all those efforts — is alarming to us,” explained Henrico County Police Chief Douglas Middleton. “We’re communicating more than ever because of that. We’ve tasked our people with coming up with more ideas, more strategies and more efficient ways of you will.”
On a positive note, police say they’ve taken in more than 400 illegal firearms since January. Henrico County and Richmond police officers are planning to stay in communication and patrol together to crack down on violent crimes. The main challenge is stopping these homicides from happening.
