RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — It’s very intense, jostling the bike around, says cyclist Greg Green as he describes pedaling up the steep cobbles of Libbie Hill.
Cyclists John Dougherty offers this description, “Probably the most notable thing is you just don’t stop shaking and at the same time your legs are asking you, why are we doing this again?”
The men are part of a group calling themselves Support RVA. They have uniforms, sponsors and have been training for weeks riding the UCI race course.
“We are training a couple times a week,” says Green.
“We’ve got 20 to 25 folks coming out to train with us week in and week out,”Keith Prusek tells 8News
It’s all to benefit two local non-profits, First things First and the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls
“The mission of First Things First is to strengthen families to build a stronger community. Virginia Home for Boys and Girls is a 170 year old organization that provides group care services and alternative education and outpatient mental health service to kids,” explains Dougherty.
On September 25, the cyclists will showcase their skills and their cause in the Conquer the Cobbles Race.
“When the pros come through here they will be racing up this hill 20-25 miles an hour shoulder to shoulder. On a good day I might be able to get up 15 miles per hour,” says Green.
They might not pedal as fast as the pros but they sure are inspiring.
