NY woman looking for nurse who saved her as a baby 40 years ago

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A local woman’s search for a nurse who cared for her years ago at Albany Medical has taken the internet by storm.

Thousands of people have shared her post, in hopes of helping her re-connect with someone she says got her through years of pain.

Just last night, Amanda Scarpinati of Athens posted pictures of herself as an infant in the arms of an Albany Medical nurse.

She was three-months-old and coming out of recovery. The burns to her head and hands, which are now still visible after years of surgeries, happened when she was about three-years-old.

She was sick with pneumonia and was placed on a couch by hot steam humidifier. She rolled right onto it, leaving her hand and head with third degree burns.

“Doctors are amazing. They do what they have to do, but after it’s said and done, they’re not there.”

“It’s the nurses who are there comforting you and herein am this tiny infant, she’s just staring at me and smiling and I wasn’t crying in any of those pictures, so that says a lot,” she recalls.

These are pictures of me as a baby while I was being treated at Albany Medical Center for third degree burns in Albany, NY. I tried almost 20 years ago to find out who the nurse is holding me but had no luck. Maybe now someone on social media will recognize her. This was from 1977. I would love to know her name and possibly get a chance to talk to her and meet her. Please share as you never know who it could reach.

Scarpinati she says she’s had the pictures her entire life and looking at the caring images got her through years of pain.

“I was bullied all though elementary school, because of my burns. I was called a witch,” she recalls.

“I’d eat my lunch in the library to be by myself so that I wouldn’t get picked on and bullied,” she continues.

The pictures are from a 1977 Albany Medical Center annual report pamphlet.

“I would look at that picture and she cared,” Scarpinati  says. “You can just see that she cared.”

She says she tried to find this nurse once before, prior to social media. She says with her birthday coming up later this month, she decided to try again.

“I see a lot of things get posted on Facebook, people find their parents that they’ve been missing,” Scarpinati says. “There’s a chance she’s local, I have a lot of friends who are nurses, let’s give it a shot.”

On top of the shares, there are thousands of likes and comments and even some suggestions of names of who this nurse might be.

Officials at Albany Medical say they are also looking for the nurse in the photograph.

When and if this nurse is found, Scarpinati says she is unsure of what she’ll say.
