11 people rescued from island after boat sinks

NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH)– Eleven people were forced to swim to an island in rough conditions after their boat sank in Norwalk Saturday night.

Police say their Marine Unit, along with the Norwalk Fire Department Marine Unit, responded to Shea Island for a report of a boat taking on water at 8:09 p.m. When they arrived on the scene, officers found that eleven people, including two children, had jumped out of a sinking boat and swam to land on Shea Island.

Police say the group had been camping on Shea Island and discovered their boat had a mechanical issue when they returned to it and it began taking on water.

The group was then transported off the island and to Veteran’s Park Docks where emergency medial services evaluated the two children for exposure.
