RICHMOND, Va (WRIC) – Folks are battening the hatches all over Virginia as heavy downpours drench the state.
In Harrisonburg, James Madison University students waded through a flood that cut campus in half with very high waters.
Flash flooding also created dangerous conditions for some in Roanoke. Emergency crews rescued two people and a dog from their home after it was surrounded by water on September 29. Meanwhile, the hospital there in Roanoke installed a flood prevention wall today as a precaution.
An emergency shelter opened and dozens of roads were closed because of flooding.
In Bassett, Virginia, heavy rain turned backyards into rivers for some homeowners.
The downpour over several days has left play-sets, grills, and even some cars nearly under water.
As their lawns turn to liquid, residents watched the current carry debris downstream.
They hoped the encroaching water stops before reaching their homes, but officials expected even more flooding as water flowed downstream from a neighboring county.
In Montgomery County, a mudslide closed parts of Route 8 for a few hours. Other roads in the county were closed by flooding. Montgomery County Schools closed early as more bands of heavy rain continue to move in.
Some in Richmond and Chesterfield County also got buckets of rain, with some homeowners calling 8 News to report overflowing drainage ditches.
With more rainy days to come, many are hoping for a break long enough to let the rainwater run off.
