By 11 a-m Virginia state police had received almost 250 calls and responded to 74 traffic crashes, luckily there were no serious injuries but the accidents caused back ups for miles including a multi car crash on I-95 near downtown Richmond.
“I slow down, follow all the rules and watch out for the other person,” said driver Ersecelle Mathis.
Mathis says she’s doing what she can to stay safe, but it’s people in other cars that has her worried.
“They are speeding like it’s not even raining out here,” said Mathis.
“Please take your time, please slow down and wear your seat belt,” said Sergeant Steve Vick with Virginia State Police.
Virginia State Police say you can help decrease your chances of getting into an accident by simply slowing down. Police say with constant rain it’s easy to miss standing water and hydroplane and if you come to a place with flooding, “Do not drive through standing water. You don’t know how deep it is and just a little bit of water can start moving that care and put you in a bad situation,” said Vick.
Vick says he expects police to be handling dozens more accidents and asks drivers to move over if they can.
“To give the tow truck driver, the medical personnel, local officers, state police, give them that room they need to operate safely.”
