RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Some commonly prescribed antibiotics – some that might be in your medicine cabinet right now – are under microscope.
The FDA has just announced it will hold a hearing to discuss the benefits and risks of some the antibiotics Cipro, Avelox and Levaquin.
They are commonly prescribed for everything from ear to sinus infections, but an 8News investigation found the FDA has received thousands of complaints about tendon ruptures, nerve, and psychiatric problems. Even reports of death believed to be linked to the drugs.
The makers of the antibiotics Bayer and Johnson & Johnson say these drugs have been used for more than 20 years to treat serious infections and that all drugs come with side effects.
