RICHMOND, Va (WRIC) – There were several parts of the Commonwealth that experienced major flooding Friday, the worst of it happening near the coast.
In the Richmond area, we didn’t see any major floods. But crews did respond to a few areas of high water.
In Chesterfield, the ramp to Courthouse Road off 76 was closed for a few hours due to high water.
But closer to the coast–it was a different story.
“We have 22 counties and localities right now that are dealing with their situation and have emergencies going on,” said Gov. Terry McAuliffe Friday evening.
A Coastal Flood Warning will be in effect through Sunday.
According to reports from WAVY, several roads became impassable during high tide.
Still, state leaders say it could be worse.
“The good news–let me tell you folks, we were worried about the double hit, a perfect storm with the major nor’easter and Hurricane Joaquin. I’m so happy to say Hurricane Joaquin has seen the wisdom and has decided to go east, and not come here to the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said McAuliffe.
State police have staged swift-water rescue teams in Richmond in case people get trapped by flood waters. The James River levels are expected to keep rising.
