Boy cuffed for suitcase clock heads to White House

WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL) – A young man turned famous when his clock in a suitcase was mistaken for a bomb will be visiting the White House Monday night. Ahmed Mohamed was handcuffed after bringing a homemade clock inside a suitcase to his high school in Irving, Texas.

Mohamed became the center of a debate about whether a non-Muslim teen would’ve received the same treatment.

President Barack Obama tweeted an invitation to Mohamed to bring the clock to the White House. And, on Monday night, Mohamed will be heading to the South Lawn without his device.

“I’m not aware of his plans to bring his clock,” said Josh Earnest, White House Press Secretary.

Mohamed received an invitation to Astronomy Night at the White House. The Obamas started the regular event back in 2009. Mohamed, 14, will be among other students, astronauts, and thought-leaders in astrology at the event.

“I don’t believe the president will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with Ahmed Mohamed,” said Earnest.

According to White House staff, the night includes stargazing, learning about new astrological discoveries, and exploring new technologies that allow humans to travel and survive in space.
