TOWN OF ROYALTON, N.Y. (WIVB) — One man is dead after police say a car struck him on Akron Road near Dysinger Road in Niagara County.

A deputy was at the scene of an initial accident, taking a report of a car that struck and killed a dog.

The woman who hit the dog had reportedly already left the scene. After this, the dog’s owner reportedly walked into the road to wash the dog’s blood off of the pavement.

As this was happening, the owner was subsequently hit by a westbound vehicle.

Niagara County Sheriff’s Deputies, Mercy Flight and multiple fire companies responded to the scene.

The unnamed man was taken to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight, where he later died. He was 53-years-old.

The car driver was not hurt, but he and his vehicle did end up in a ditch.

Charges may be filed as investigation continues. Deputies say impairment or speed could be possible factors in the accident.

Akron Road (Route 93) from Dysinger Road to Singer Road was closed for a number of hours but has since reopened.
