RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Happy Father’s Day to all the dads! The stars have aligned and we have not only Father’s Day, but the summer solstice (the day with longest sunlight), AND an awesome show in the sky tonight!
We will not only have a superb view of the moon, Venus, and Jupiter in the western sky, but if you take dad out around 9pm, he can also see the International Space Station—what a show! To see the moon, Venus, and Jupiter, look to the western sky after sunset. For the International Space Station, look to the west beginning at 9:03pm. It will be visible for only 4 minutes, moving from the West to the South/Southeast. The highest angle will be up to 46° from the horizon. It is best seen away from the city lights and obstructions such as trees and houses.
Tonight we’ll be quiet and mainly clear with a low around 75 degrees. Winds are west, turning to the NW at 4-8mph.
Tomorrow we’ll see mostly sunny skies. It’s looking dry for most of the area all day, but there’s a small risk mainly northwest of the city of Richmond for an isolated afternoon shower or storm. Highs tomorrow will be in the mid 90s.
Tuesday could be a record breaking day of warmth. I’m forecasting a high of 101 degrees, which if we hit it would tie the old record of 101 degrees set back in 1988. Heat index values will be near 105° or even warmer for some. We’ll have partly cloudy skies and the chance for an isolated storm in the late afternoon/early evening as a weak cold front drops through from our north.
Wednesday we’ll be left with cooler air (HA!), with a high around 93 degrees. The pattern of afternoon storm chances continues through the end of the week, with the threat every day.
Thursday will be in the low 90s, while Friday we’ll be back to the mid 90s.
The weekend ahead looks much cooler (and a lot closer to the average than we have been!), but at the expense of rain and storms both days. Highs will be in the lower 80s with scattered thunderstorms each day next weekend.
