BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Although many iPhone, iPad and iPod users may have been delighted on Wednesday to see a new emoji set unveiled, some parents may take issue with one new emoji.
Among some of the new emojis are a taco, squirrel and a variety of lovable faces, but some are bound to dislike a new hand gesture also released in the same package — the middle finger. The middle finger is typically in every adult’s vernacular, however many children may only know it as the “F-Word.”
The Apple release is new, and many have yet to download it, however it is already raising some eyebrows. It could cause a ruckus with some parents, and potentially mothers, who can be particularly raucous on matters that affect their children. Those parents may not appreciate the potential for their children to share explicit, Apple-endorsed messages with one another.
Parents, arguably one of Apple’s key demographics due to their purchasing power, may have the power to control whether or not Apple decides to keep the new emoji.
Apple has made alterations to its emoji sets in the past due to popular demand — and criticism — including adding different skin colors to every emoji that depicts skin. Those options are also extended to the new middle finger option.
