ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) – Andrea Grasso of Quarryville spent Wednesday shopping for the finishing touches to her children’s costumes.
“They are going as Dorothy, Mickey Mouse, and Snow White,” she said. “Our 4-year-old has been planning since July what she wants to be. It’s changed about 50 times!”
Over the next couple of days, ghouls and goblins will pour along streets looking for treats. It’s the ones looking for a trick that cause the problems. Insurance companies told ABC 27 News that this is a time when vandalism claims increase by more than 80 percent. Sometimes those claims can cost thousands of dollars.
Craig Rothstein, a State Farm insurance agent in Elizabethtown, told ABC 27 News about some of the calls that he’s received in his office.
“People have called in and said that someone smashed pumpkins on their cars,” he recalled. “(Some have had people) toilet paper their house.”
Rothstein said most vandalism cases are covered with basic home and renters insurance. He said the same thing goes for any potential vandalism to your car.
“Certainly it’s helpful to know that if something does happen you do have coverage for it,” he said.
Rothstein said there are some things you can do to keep your stuff safe.
“Park in well-lit areas, maybe in a parking lot where there are multiple cars,” he said. “Stay away from dark alleys and streets. Don’t leave anything out in the open.”
Rothstein said vandalism claims shouldn’t impact your premium.
