CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police are investigating after a man was found dead following a single-vehicle crash that occurred in Caroline County overnight.
State Police responded to a reported traffic accident around 2:40 a.m. on I-95 southbound at mile marker 102 in Caroline County. Police say a pick-up truck was traveling south on I-95 when it ran off the right side of the interstate and overturned off the shoulder.
When officers arrived on scene, they found the driver of the truck was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The adult male driver, who has been identified as 43-year-old Vernon Huff of Caroline County, was flown by med-flight helicopter to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He later died later Friday morning. His remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy.
State police are still investigating and are in the process of retracing the driver’s movements leading up to the shooting and eventual crash. I-95 southbound was closed for hours at exit 104. All lanes have since reopened.
