CAROLINE COUNTY, Va (WRIC) – Family members of the Caroline County man who was found shot several times after crashing along I-95- are searching for answers, begging whoever is responsible to come forward.
The incident happened around 3 a.m. Friday.
Saturday, family members spoke to 8News reporter Claudia Rupcich about Vernon Huff, 43.
“It just hurts so bad,” said Elizabeth Fells, his sister.
Fells drove in from Virginia Beach Saturday morning to be with her family.
“I’m still devastated,” she said.
Huff was father of two, and one of five siblings.
“He was a wonderful brother. He loved life. He was just a good person to be around,” said Vivian Woolfolk, another sister.
State police say Huff was driving his Chevy pickup truck on I-95 south when he ran off the right side of the road and overturned. When troopers arrived, they found he was suffering from multiple gunshots wounds. He later died in the hospital.
“I just cannot understand who would do something that bad to my brother,” said Fells.
Police are still trying to figure out what led up to the shooting and crash.
Meanwhile, his family is united, relying on their faith.
“We miss him, you know and we’re just praying for strength,” said Woolfolk.
Huff was working as a security officer at area bars. His sisters say he loved working on his truck and helping people out.
“His kind heart. His beautiful smile. Always had a joke and just wanted to keep the family laughing,” said Woolfolk.
Fells says one of her favorite memories is a voicemail huff left—singing happy birthday.
“That’s not something he usually does, and just last week I erased all my messages and I decided to keep his. I said ‘This is a treasure. And I’m so glad that i did because I can listen to his voice any time that i want to,” said Fells.
Police believe this was an isolated incident, and there’s no threat to the public’s safety.
Huff’s family have created a GoFundMe account to help pay for funeral costs.
