CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield Fire & EMS and police are conducting an investigation at an extended-stay hotel in Chesterfield this morning.
Fire officials told 8News that crews were called to the InTown Suites, located at 11551 Green Spring Road, around 4:30 a.m. after a fire alarm was activated.
A room on the third floor had exploded and blew a window into the hotel’s parking lot.
Brandon Chandler was staying in the room below. He says he was hanging out the window talking on the phone when the explosion was triggered.
“I heard a big rumble and the next thing you know I seen the window just fly out, right into the parking lot,” said Chandler. “It just straight flew out.”
The hotel’s sprinklers extinguished the fire before crews arrived on scene.
Dominion Virginia Power crews, firefighters, police and ambulances have all responded to the scene. Hazmat crews are still on scene investigating.
“They’re looking into all aspects trying to figure out what was inside that caused this explosion to be able to blow the window out and start a fire,” said Lt. Jason Elmore of Chesterfield Fire & EMS.
The building was evacuated. No injuries were initially reported. Two residents have been transported to the hospital, but officials say it’s unknown if that’s because of the explosion or just general illness.
The cause of the disturbance is still under investigation. As of now, officials say they do not want to speculate.
“So many different things can cause an explosion,” said Lt. Elmore.
