Hanover Co. names new superintendent of public schools

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Hanover County Public Schools has a new superintendent.

The school board announced Tuesday that Dr. Michael B. Gill has been named the school district’s 13th superintendent. Dr. Gill will officially step into the position on Dec. 1.

“The School Board was impressed with the exceptionally strong applicant pool that pursued this position, which made this a highly competitive process,” said Robert L. Hundley, Jr., Hanover County School Board Chairman. :In the end, Dr. Gill clearly rose to the top.  We have been very impressed with Dr. Gill since he assumed his role as Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Leadership in 2014.

“His résumé is filled with experiences and positions that uniquely qualify him to lead our division to greater heights. His vision for our schools is to ensure high quality educational opportunities for all students, and the Board is thrilled to have a leader of his caliber as our new superintendent.”

 

Dr. Gill is a resident of Hanover County and a lifelong resident of the Richmond area.  He is currently the assistant superintendent of Instructional Leadership and Chief Academic Officer for HCPS where he has served since July 2014.  Dr. Gill started his career in education in 1997 as a high school history teacher in Caroline County and has served with distinction in a variety of roles since that time in Chesterfield County, including director of middle school education, executive principal for career and technical education, principal, assistant principal, dean of students and department chair.  In addition, he is currently a professor of practice at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Doctor of Education program.  He has also served and continues to serve on several local, regional and state professional boards, and has numerous professional affiliations.

Dr. Gill earned a Doctor of Education, Master’s degree and post-Master’s certificate from Virginia Commonwealth University. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Kentucky University.

Dr. Gill and his wife Sherry have two children who attend Hanover County Public Schools.
