COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — Colonial Heights animal control is asking for the public’s help in identifying the person they believe abandoned three dogs at the local animal shelter last Wednesday.

According to the shelter, someone pulled up in a pick-up truck on Wednesday and threw the dogs over the shelter’s fence. Even though the shelter did not mention a time of the incident, a picture posted on the shelter’s Facebook page showed that it was dark at the time the animals were left behind.

Since the shelter posted pictures of the dogs on Facebook asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the person who left the dog behind, hundred of people have shared the photos.

“Dogs can’t really do anything for themselves, they look for their owners to take care of them and these people just neglected the fact of a living creature and I really think it’s terrible,” says Colonial Heights resident Eric Brewton.

The shelter says anyone who calls with a tip doesn’t have to leave their name or testify in court. The person who left the dogs could be charged with animal abandonment, a class three misdemeanor.

As officials try to figure out who left the animals behind, some in Colonial Heights say it’s fortunate this situation didn’t end differently.

“I think they knew these dogs would be taken care of. They could have thrown these dogs out the door, on the interstate or in someone’s front yard and just have them roaming the streets or getting hit in the streets, so although horrendous, I think they knew the dogs would be taken care of,” says Kevin Buskey.

Anyone with information on this case may call Colonial Heights Animal Control at 804-520-9397.
