COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) — Attorney General Mark R. Herring announced Tuesday that 45-year-old Douglas M. Wright of Colonial Heights has been sentenced to 37 years in prison after being found guilty on four counts of distribution and nine counts of possession of child pornography.
Judge Edward Robbins, Jr. sentenced the defendant today in Colonial Heights Circuit Court. Wright had previously been found guilty following a two-day jury trial on June 16, 2015 and remained incarcerated while awaiting sentencing.
Evidence presented in court showed that the defendant was identified through an undercover investigation by a law enforcement officer into the trading of child pornography over peer-to-peer networks on the Internet. The officer came into contact with an individual who was making numerous images depicting child pornography available for sharing on the Internet.
The officer was able to download four files on two separate occasions containing child pornography directly from the individual’s computer. Based on this information, the Colonial Heights Police Department obtained a search warrant for the defendant’s residence. Forensic examination of the defendant’s computer revealed that the defendant had saved and distributed 108 videos of child pornography. The child pornography depicted prepubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct including sadomasochistic conduct.
“This is an incredibly strong sentence that is absolutely appropriate given the nature of these crimes,” Attorney General Herring said. “The jury sent a strong message with their recommended sentence and I’m pleased to see Judge Robbins accepted it. I again offer my sincere thanks to the officers, prosecutors, and computer forensic examiners involved in this case for their diligent pursuit of justice.”
This case was investigated by the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the Colonial Heights Police Department as part of the Southern Virginia ICAC Task Force. The Computer Forensic Unit of the Virginia Attorney General’s Office conducted the computer forensic examinations for the investigation. Assistant Attorney General Stacey Rohrs of the Virginia Attorney General’s Office prosecuted the case on behalf of the Commonwealth, with the assistance of the Colonial Heights Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
