HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — No one was injured after a Henrico home went up in flames Thursday morning.
According to Henrico Fire, crews responded to the 700 block of Hughes Road off Elko Road in the county’s east end for a report of a structure fire. First arriving units reported heavy fire coming through the roof of the single-story residence. It took crews approximately 40 minutes to mark the fire under control.
An official with Henrico Fire says the neighbor who noticed the fire and called 9-1-1 was able to rescue a dog from the home. Fire crews were also able to rescue a cat during the fire and used a pet oxygen mask to revive it. Another cat was successfully reunited with the homeowner after the fire was extinguished.
No one was home at the time the fire occurred. The home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. Red Cross is working with the home owners.
The exact cause and area of origin of the fire remains under investigation, however it has been declared accidental.
“Remember as colder weather approaches ensure that if using wood stoves or portable heating devices that you maintain a three foot clearance around the heating appliance,” an official with Henrico Fire said in a release. “With rain and wet weather in the winter, please be extra mindful if bringing wood in out of the elements, and do not place it too close to your heater.
“Remember to check your smoke detectors and ensure that they have a fresh batter in them during the holiday season.”
